The Naked Truth Behind The GOP Calling Porn A ‘Public Health Crisis’

Did you guys know the GOP has a tendency to embrace hyper-religious, regressive stances over issues we should’ve moved on from years ago, while completely ignoring the imminentproblems we’re facing as a country?

You did?!

Oh.

Well, if that’s the case, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to you that Republicans adopted an amendment to their draft platform on Monday that declared porn a “public health crisis.”

The provisionstated,

Pornography, with its harmful effects, especially on children, has become a public health crisis that is destroying the life of millions.

Indeed, according to the GOP, porn is ruining MILLIONS of lives.

This comes from the party that is unwilling to do anything about the plague of gun violence in the US, which claims over 10,000 lives per year.

The GOP even continues to block federal research on gun violence, in spite of the fact it was declared a public health crisis by the American Medical Association (which actually knows a thing or two about public health).

Not to mention, suicide is one of the leadingcauses of death in the US, and over 20,000 people use firearms to take their own lives on an annual basis.

But sure, let’s focus on porn and forget the fact the worst mass shooting in US history occurred a month ago.

The hypocrisy of all this is pretty rich, given Donald Trump is the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, a man with a history of objectifying women and who’s graced the cover of Playboy magazine.

Additionally, it’s not as if Republicans don’t watch porn. Quite recently, a GOP congressional candidate shared a screenshot of his browser in a Facebook postbut forgot to close the porn tabs he had open.

Moreover, the argument that porn is bad for public health is based on pseudoscience.

There is widespread evidence watching porn is actually good for you, and increases libido and relieves stress. And, in spite of what some might claim, neurologists say porn is not addictive, and research shows it doesn’t cause erectile dysfunction.

So, please, Republicans, can we start focusing on real issues?
